International Karate Connection Association - Orange BeltCLAPPING TIGER

Defense against a front bear-hug, arms free.

Technical Details:

As the assailant moves in, deliver a double clap on his ears with slightly cupped closed hands to break his momentum and disorient him.  Immediately grabbing the ears (or whatever you can get a hold of), deliver a head butt to the bridge of his nose while simultaneously thrusting a right knee into his groin.  When bringing the right foot down, step to the outside of the attacker’s right foot while at the same time sliding your right hand under his right arm (under his arm pit, grabbing the top shoulder area) and controlling the lower part of his arm with your left hand.  Pivot in close as you execute an over-head throw bringing the attacker down directly in front of you.

Additional Notes :
  • This is a tough one to put into words!  As with the other escapes, it is very important that you start this technique as soon as the assailant is in striking distance of the ear clap.  If he sinks the bear hug, it will be very difficult to escape.
  • Be very careful in training this one as it is relatively easy to damage the ear drums if you do an actual ear clap on your training partner.
  • The throw we use in class is slightly different than the one indicated on the IKCA training tapes.  Sifu has the permission of Vic LeRoux to teach it this way.  The original throw brings the attacker around the side as opposed to over the top.
  • When practicing the throw, a key factor is to make sure your belt is lower than your attacker’s belt; that is to say that your center of gravity is lower than that of your attacker's.
  • If you are muscling the throw, you are doing it wrong.
