International Karate Connection Association - Orange BeltSTEP DRAG

This foot maneuver allows for forward advance and backward retreat without compromising the neutral bow stance, thus allowing you to maintain balance between mobility and stability while minimizing your available targets.

Technical Details:

Starting in a neutral bow position, step forward with the lead foot, then drag the trailing foot up to neutral bow. The torso and head should maintain level position throughout the maneuver (no bobbing) and the weight should always be equally distributed to the balls of the feet. When moving the feet, they should always maintain a straight path in the direction you are moving so that the stance is maintained.

This maneuver is also done moving in a backwards progression. All elements mentioned above are still maintained.

Additional Notes :
  • It was while practicing this maneuver that Walt mentioned the concept of visualizing horizontal rods pointing to the 12 o’clock from the knees. When you move, your knees and feet hold this width. Also, the length of your stance should not change as you advance.
  • One of the primary concepts of the step drag is that the stance should be maintained. In otherwords, if you move the front foot forward 12 inches, then the rear foot drags forward 12 inches and maintains the stance.
  • Be cautious about the position of the trailing foot. In learning this maneuver it was not uncommon to find that my trailing foot would come out of position; in some cases the foot would go from a 45° angle toward 90°. Another issue I was having difficulty with while learning this maneuver was that my stance would tend to change from a neutrual bow to more of an inline stance.
