International Karate Connection Association - Orange BeltREAR HEEL KICK

This kick is delivered to a target situated behind you, with the force of impact created with the heel of the foot.

Technical Details:

The contact zone on the foot for this kick is the heel and it should be launched at or near a 45° angle into the target directly from point of origin and kicking “to your own spine”. From a standing position, knees bent, look over your shoulder to see your target, and launch your kick staying true to vertical alignment as much as possible, kicking through your target.

Additional Notes :
  • When I was taught this kick, we practiced kicking “Bruce” the dummy in the solar plexus. One of the things to watch out for when executing this kick is to not look past your shoulder, but rather glance over your shoulder to acquire your target. If you look around your shoulder, you will move your body out of position and you will have a very difficult, if not impossible, time delivering a kick in the vertical plane at the appropriate angle (your body will cause you to do more of a side kick because it is adapting to your movements).
  • Your shoulders should stay square to the target as much as possible so your body is in the correct position.
  • This is a point of origin kick, meaning it launches directly into the target from its original position. There is no 'cocking' of the knee or any other movement involved.
  • By driving with the heel, you are utilizing the principle of penetration vs. dissapation where the relatively small hard surface of the heel will deliver more force per square inch than with the ball of the foot. It also is in direct alignment with the bones of the leg for better back up mass.
